Producer Price Index

  January  2009

 
      The Ministry of Commerce would like to report the movements of Producer Price Index of Thailand in January 2009.
Surveying and compiling commodity prices collected from agriculturists and business owners all over the country for 506 items, cover 3 groups which consist of agricultural products, mining products and manufactural products. They will be computed to compare price changes in form of the following index.
      
       1. Producer Price Index in January 2009 (base year 2000 = 100)
       In January 2009 the PPI is 143.2.
      
       2. The percentage change of the PPI in January 2009 compared with
       2.1. December 2008 increased 0.7 percent
       2.2. January 2008 decreased 2.5 percent
      
       3. PPI of Thailand in January 2009 change from PPI in December 2008, increased 0.7 percent due to all groups price index rose such as 2.0 percent increased in price index of agricultural products group, 1.5 percent increased in price index of mining products group and 0.4 percent increased in price index of manufactural products group.
       3.1 The agricultural products group price index in January 2009 increased 2.0 percent (decreased 10.0 percent in December 2008) due to rising in agricultural products price, especially paddy; paddy market continually demand both domestic consuming and exporting while inadequate products. It came from the end of harvest season. Moreover, exceeding demand pull from major rice pawn 2008/09 project. These result to rise in price of paddy, Para rubber; there were many old Para trees were cut and the season of Para leaves shed. So, Para rubber products decline. In addition, other goods which increased prices were oyster, short necked clams and green mussels.
      
       3.2 The mining products group price index in January 2009 increased 1.5 percent (decreased 3.1 percent in December 2008) due to increasing in prices of crude oil, natural gas, and metal ores (lead, zinc and tin).
       3.3 The manufactural products group price index in January 2009 increased 0.4 percent (decreased 2.4 percent in December 2008) turned up in almost prices of food products especially swine due to rise consuming demand from incoming Chinese festival, white rice price followed paddy price that it increase price and other goods were gasoline, heavy fuel oil, kerosene, rubber smoked sheet, jewelry and related articles of gold also increased.
      
       4. The percentage change of PPI in January 2009 compared with January 2008 fell 2.5
       percent by 17.5 percent decreased in mining products group price index due to reducing in price of condensate, lead metal ore, zinc metal ores and tin metal ores significantly, 4.0 percent decreased in manufactural products groups price index due to reducing in price of petroleum products, polyethylene, rubber smoked sheet, block rubber, plastic sacks and plastic bags and 7.4 percent increased in agricultural products group price index due to many items of agricultural products increased prices, for example; paddy, pig and chicken eggs.
